Persevering through time

“Our vision is for the African American Flag to continually enrich and inspire the lives and image of African Americans forever.

We believe that the African American Flag promotes and represents positive and non-political principles that assist African Americans and all Americans to change their mindsets on the negative images that permeate throughout the African American community.”

- David and Tonya Harvey

The Creators of the Flag

Tonya and David are both natives of Baltimore, Maryland and graduates of local HBCUs (Coppin State University and Morgan State University). They were married for 12 years, until David’s sudden passing in 2002. They created the flag together 1 year after their marriage and worked diligently to have it displayed throughout the country and at several international locations.

The two appeared on television and radio, and in newspapers and magazines to promote the flag. They made a great start by getting endorsements from colleges, churches, schools, businesses, and several other organizations, including the NAACP.

David’s early death slowed down the process of spreading the word about the flag, although it has remained a prominent symbol of hope and love for the African American community, in the hearts of dedicated supporters throughout the country.
